Maluna features

Maluna supports you in caring for your plants by bringing together your garden, the season and the weather where you live. The four areas below show how it works in detail.

Four perspectives on your garden

01

Your garden

In Maluna you set up your garden as a digital picture of your real one. A garden can have several areas, for example a bed, a raised bed, a balcony or a greenhouse – each area groups the plants that grow in similar conditions.

You can assign every plant in the garden to an area, so Maluna knows where it stands and what care history it already has there – an area is not required, though, and plants without an assigned area remain possible. This shows you at a glance how long a plant has been growing in your garden and what was done last.

This structure is the basis of every future recommendation: without a garden on record, Maluna cannot relate anything to your location; an assigned area makes that link more precise still. The page How Maluna works explains how this structure turns into concrete steps.

02

What to do now

Maluna sorts every task in your garden into one of five categories: today, this week, later, overdue or optional. Today means a task that needs your attention the same day, for example because a plant needs water now. This week means a task that can wait a few days but should be done within the week.

Later means a task that falls due in a while and mainly helps you keep an overview of your garden. Overdue means a task you should already have done, which is why it stands out. Optional means a task that is useful but not decisive for the plant’s wellbeing.

In future, this sorting will no longer come only from what you enter, but will also be worked out automatically from the plant, the weather and the season. [Status: in development] Today you can already create each task by hand and follow its care history. The page How Maluna works shows how Maluna turns plant, garden and season into a recommendation.

03

Weather in context

The weather on its own does not tell you what to do in your garden – only in relation to a plant and its location does a weather situation become useful information. You can already see the current weather for your location on your garden dashboard.

Whether a rainy day makes watering a particular plant unnecessary, or a frosty night calls for winter protection, depends on the plant and its area, not on the weather alone. In future, a weather history with growing degree days, frost and dry spells will be added as a context layer to how your tasks are sorted. [Status: in development]

Weather then stops being just a number on the screen and becomes the basis for deciding whether a garden job makes sense today or is better left for later. The article When to scarify your lawn shows how closely timing and care are linked.

04

Plant knowledge

The Maluna plant catalogue contains a detailed profile for every plant. It covers location, light, water, growth, hardiness, flowering, fruit, pruning, feeding, watering, winter protection, diseases and pests, as far as they are known for the plant. This information comes from the care rules and the knowledge about diseases and pests stored in the plant catalogue.

You do not have to bring this knowledge yourself: as soon as a plant is assigned to an area of your garden, Maluna bases its tasks on this profile. So it is not your prior knowledge that decides the right care, but the expert information in the catalogue about your specific plant.

The article Brown spots on tomato leaves: cause and cure shows what a characteristic looks like in practice.

The difference

What sets Maluna apart from a garden calendar

A static garden calendar gives everyone the same task for a given date, regardless of which plant is in the garden and where that garden is. Maluna instead works out a task from the specific plant, its area, the season and the weather where you live, so two gardens can show different tasks on the same day.

„Roses are pruned in March.“

Maluna

Your rose in the terrace area was only planted last year and stands in a sunny, sheltered spot – so Maluna postpones pruning by two weeks.

How it all fits together

The page How Maluna works shows how plant knowledge, your garden and the current context become a concrete task.
